We not only want your smile to be healthy and beautiful, we want our environment to remain so as well.

In addition to basic environmentally friendly practices such as using energy efficient lighting and furnace and incorporating a programmable thermostat, there are also industry specific measures our practice takes to help ensure we make as little impact on the environment as possible.  We feel that, as professionals, we have the obligation to reduce our environmental impact.  Here are a few simple and reasonable steps we have taken in pursuit of this goal.

  • Digital X-Rays
      • Digital x-rays incorporate reusable sensors rather than film.
          • No film means no harsh chemicals are needed for the developing process.  Two chemicals used to develop film based x-rays are Fixer and Developer.  The use of Fixer releases silver into the environment and Developer   contains chromium and hydroquinone - both toxic chemicals contributing to environmental pollution.   According to the Eco-Dentistry Association, every dental office with film based x-rays use 500 liters of each solution every five years.
          • No film also means no film wrappers.  With film based x-rays, disposable plastic wrappers with a lead lining are can not reused and are thrown away.  The Eco-Dentistry Association estimates that the disposal of over 17,000 lead linings will be prevented every five years for every dental office that incorporates this technology.
      • Digital x-rays also use up to 90% less radiation than traditional x-rays utilizing film.  This translates to increased energy efficiency as well as patient safety.
  • Paperless Office Practices
      • To cut down dramatically on paper usage, all charts are digital and kept securely on our computer system.  This not only helps our environment but is also much more efficient when we need to send records to a specialist or insurance company.   The Eco-Dentistry Association estimates this will save the typical dental practice over 10,000 sheets of paper annually.

  • Amalgam (Silver Fillings)

      • Dental amalgam contains several heavy metals, including mercury, which can be hazardous to our environment.  While we do not place dental amalgam fillings in our office, it is often removed as these fillings become worn or break as they age.  We use special traps to filter pieces of these old fillings and keep them out of the public water supply.  We dispose of the trapped amalgam with a company who recycles them.
  • Sanitation and Sterilization
      • Often, harsh chemicals are used to sanitize dental offices.  These chemicals vaporize easily and can find their way into the public water supply.  Chemical sterilization uses explosive, toxic gases (often ethylene oxide) that are often supplied with CFC's.  Rather than chemical sterilization of instruments, we use a hospital grade, steam based sterilization technique with no toxic chemicals.  Biodegradable, enzyme based cleaners are used whenever possible.

Given all of the above, we will NEVER COMPROMISE THE SAFETY OF OUR PATIENTS OR TEAM for any reason.  However, the simple steps outlined above do not compromise safety and to use other methods is needlessly irresponsible.  Our sterilization effectiveness is spore checked weekly using a third party to ensure everyone's safety.
